Stella

Legs crossed under me, I adjusted my glasses as I stared at my laptop’s screen. I needed to finalize the quarterly earning reports for my artists. My team had done a great job with the paperwork, but I would be the one facing a judge if anything was out of line. With Mia fast asleep, I double-checked all the spreadsheets before giving my accountant the final seal of approval.

It was after ten when my doorbell rang. For such a late hour, there could only be a handful of people showing up at my door. Rachel was out of town for a family event. Mom had gone on an overnight work trip to London. That only left one reasonable answer. Thinking of his dark eyes and comforting touch, I smiled, but the man in my peephole’s view wasn’t the one I had in mind.

“Spencer?”

Pulling back the deadbolt, I tugged up the sleeves of my old Brown sweatshirt. I didn’t know what to make of his arrival. I’d already taken off my bra and slathered my face in serum and moisturizer. I was ready to settle in for the night, not receive company.

“Hi, Stella,” Spencer greeted me as the door opened.

“Hey,” I answered. “Is, um, everything okay?”

He wore a brown tweed suit and a lazy smile. Leaning against my door frame, I wondered if he’d been out drinking. I couldn’t smell anything on him, but that meant nothing.

“Yeah,” he promised me. “I was just out with some friends nearby. When I started heading home, I remembered you lived nearby, so I stopped in on my way to the subway station.”

“Really?” I asked curiously. “Where did you eat?”

“Chama Mama,” he told me while breezing into my living room. “My college friends suggested the place.”

That was a Georgian restaurant a few blocks southwest of me. If Spencer was going to deign the subway system with his presence, he would be heading uptown to his old apartment once occupied by John Lennon himself. It took me a second to remember, but I quickly surmised that no station near me would be a direct route. Once again, this was all mind-numbing pretense.

I didn’t have the patience for it. I was on day two of my four-day period, and I still had spreadsheets to look over. Spencer didn’t seem to notice or care.

“I didn’t know you wore glasses, Stella,” he remarked while picking up a framed picture of Rachel and me. “Do you usually wear contacts?”

“No, they’re just for reading or computer work,” I explained, adjusting the rounded tortoiseshell frames. “They would also be for driving at night, but I don’t know how to do that.”

Spencer laughed. “You’re a born and bred New Yorker.”

“Mia’s asleep,” I reminded him. “So, if you could, keep your voice down.”

“Right,” he realized, glancing toward the little hall. “You’re cute in this picture, Stella. When was it taken?”

“Graduation day at Brown. Hence, the cap and gown.”

“Right,” he said again.

It was bizarre to watch him. Spencer was a grown man, but he was acting like a lost puppy wandering around the living room with confused excitement.
